Clarkdale designated as Arizona Solar Community

The Town Council and staff joined Clarkdale citizens, Solar Ambassadors and local solar power businesses to celebrate the town's recent designation as an Arizona Solar Community. The designation was made by Arizona SmartPower, a non-profit organization promoting clean, renewable energy.

SmartPower developed the Arizona Solar Challenge with a goal of having more than 5 percent of owner occupied homes install solar power.

The Clarkdale Town Council accepted the Arizona Solar Challenge in March 2011 and committed to reaching the goal with either solar electric or solar hot water by 2015. By December 2011, the town had met the 5 percent goal.

Town Manager Gayle Mabery announced during the celebration that the town has reached 6 percent of its owner-occupied homes using solar for a portion of their energy needs.

Mabery announced a new goal for the town of 10 percent using solar power by 2015. She pointed out that one of the Sustainable Clarkdale Initiative goals is to have 100 percent of the electricity needs of the town generated from renewable sources within Clarkdale boundaries.
