Editorial: Little to 'like' about Facebook's tactics
Facebook is an extraordinary tool, but its pitfalls have become increasingly apparent. As the LA Times stated in an editorial, users' personal information, interests and habits are all fair game for the company, which has little compunction about analyzing the data and selling them to advertisers.

Editorial: College dialogue a two-way street; no road blocks in Clarkdale
We're not holding our breath waiting on the creation of an administratively independent Verde Valley Community College.

But one good outcome of that dream is the enhanced emphasis on good communication between the college and the Verde Valley communities it serves, especially in Clarkdale.

Editorial: Now the hard work begins for Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District
For the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District, this week's effort to involve the community in the decision for a $15 million capital bond vote in November was hardly a rousing success. The community did not show up in droves to make its voice heard.

Editorial: Time to get to the facts of library usage
Talking off the top of one's head in a public meeting can be a dangerous practice. This is especially true when the discussion begs for real facts and figures.

Editorial: Here is your chance to help shape policies of Yavapai College
Bashing Yavapai College and its governing board has become a favorite pastime for some folks in the Verde Valley in 2014.

Their criticism of the institution and its policies has not fallen on deaf ears.

Editorial: Let the Verde Valley decide who will serve on college advisory council
Who better than folks in the Verde Valley to decide the very best people to advise the college on what's best for the Verde Campus? Who better than folks in the Verde Valley to offer advice on how the college can best serve the educational needs of this region?

Editorial: Big challenge for newest college committee
In the middle of a Verde Valley mini-revolt, Yavapai College is launching its new Verde Valley Advisory Committee to "enhance communications" with local residents. Clearly, maintenance of that communication has been lax in recent years, and college officials have a challenge.

Editorial: Taxing times demand major sales job by schools, county
One local tax-and-spend proposal already has made its way to the November ballot and two more seem destined to join them.

For all three, it's going to be a hard sale.

Editorial: Round and round on the education merry-go-round
During a presentation last year on the new Common Core standards, Cottonwood-Oak Creek Superintendent Barb U'Ren was asked what she expected the shelf life to be for this latest trend in education.

"Good question," U'Ren replied. "I wish I knew."

Editorial: More care, less haste needed to create child welfare agency
Haste makes waste, which is not a good harbinger for the newly forming Department of Child Safety.

The new agency has been sorely needed in Arizona after years of troubles at Child Protective Services within the Department of Economic Security. Many of the ideas being incorporated into the new autonomous agency are solid and necessary.

Editorial: Thoughtful ways to help fire crews
Now numbering more than 1,000, the fire crew members came prepared and did not need supplies or volunteer help from local communities. So the thoughtful people have stayed out of the way and instead sent good thoughts, prayers and moments of silence out for the safety of the crews on a difficult job.

Editorial: Keep focus on rightful tribute of Memorial Day
Monday we will honor our nation's ultimate defenders of freedom in Memorial Day services all over the United States.

This is one of two holidays each year set aside to remember our nation's veterans, and both are appropriate days of tribute to the more than 1.5 million servicemen who gave their lives for their country and to those veterans still living who served America.

Editorial: Urgent care center a welcome addition in Camp Verde
It wasn't that long ago that Camp Verde did not even have a medical doctor in town full time. So, as much as the economic boost of the proposed urgent care center has been touted, just having more access to more medical care is a big step forward.

Editorial: Despite problems, 4FRI still best forest plan
The standing-room-only crowd at the Museum of Northern Arizona last week to discuss the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) was both urgent and enthusiastic. The urgency is warranted - 4FRI has been sluggish.

Editorial: Annexation plan shows how Cottonwood, Camp Verde have come full circle
Twenty years ago, the mayors of Cottonwood and Camp Verde made a hand-shake deal that the land between the two communities along State Route 260 would always be undeveloped open space. They agreed Cottonwood would not annex to the south along 260 and Camp Verde would not annex to the north.

Editorial: Message just as powerful 2,000 years later
Today, in Good Friday services, and through the Easter weekend, Christians worldwide will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

More than 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ began preaching a doctrine that was foreign to most. His inner circle of disciples joined Him in spreading a message of peace, kindness, love for your fellow man and a promise of salvation for those who followed His teachings.

Editorial: Let's move ahead: Mingus sports complex old, out-dated
Give Mingus boss Tim Foist credit for being thorough.

His plan for a new sports complex at the high school kills three birds with one stone. The ball-field becomes properly configured for both football and soccer, with the potential of adding an artificial surface.
