CAMP VERDE - Seven years ago, Melissa and Josh Mathews started going to auctions.

Now, they own their own secondhand store.

"We had so much fun at the auctions," Melissa said. "Then we did a few yard sales. We had so many good things, we knew this stuff would sell."

Melissa and Josh recently opened Mathews Resale Shop, located at 155 S. Montezuma Castle Highway, unit #7, in the 4R Business Park. Mathews Resale Shop, a family-owned secondhand and consignment store, is the couple's first retail business.

With clothing, shoes, dishware, books, games, DVDs and CDs, furniture, stuffed animals, even arts and craft supplies, Mathews Resale Shop has a little bit of something for everybody. The couple prides itself in offering a diverse selection of items, mostly using auctions to stock the store with inventory.

"Many shops are specific in the things they sell," Melissa said. "We feel that we have a good variety."

And the young couple funded the business themselves. Not that they didn't look for support.

"We weren't able to get financial help," Melissa said. "But our family has helped with physical labor, and they baby-sit our kids while we are working."

According to Josh the best part of being self-employed is the time he can spend with family.

"This feels good," Josh said. "I worked mostly out of town for the past three years. The best thing about this is being around family."

According to Melissa, seeing people happy is a big part of the business. And Josh agrees.

"I pride myself on being customer-friendly," he said. "Business is not about the stuff in our building. It's about people. It makes me feel great when people walk out with smiles on their faces."

According to Melissa, a lot of family support - and a lot of prayer - helped get the business started.

"It's not just us," she said. "We knew we wanted to do this years ago. All of a sudden, all the doors were opened."
